Ongoing Surveillance

What’s the plan?

I’ve had my colonoscopy, my results were normal, what now?

Even with a normal colonoscopy result you will need ongoing surveillance.

A positive FOBT result at any stage means that you will need to have regular colonoscopies to monitor the state of your bowel and check that no concerning conditions are developing. This is usually done every 12-24 months on an ongoing basis.

The Gastroenterologist who does your colonoscopy will determine the frequency of your repeat colonoscopies, and will put you on a recall list to contact you when your next colonoscopy is due.

You should make sure you keep them notified of any changes in your contact details.

What if I develop symptoms between colonoscopies?

If you have any changes in bowel habits, pain or bleeding you should see your GP as soon as possible. You may need to see your Gastroenterologist earlier than planned.
