Colonoscopy - Procedure
I need a colonoscopy, what does it involve?
What is a Colonoscopy?
A colonoscopy is a simple procedure to look at the bowel to investigate the underlying causes of bleeding in the bowel.
Colonoscopy is performed by a Gastroenterologist as a day case in a hospital or day procedure centre.
Blood in the stool can be caused by things like polyps, haemorrhoids, anal fissure, burst blood vessels or bowel cancer.
Before your colonoscopy -
You will have an appointment with a Gastroenterologist, who will explain the procedure and get your consent.
In the lead up to your colonoscopy you will need to modify your diet and follow a bowel preparation regime to empty the colon. It’s not much fun, but it’s essential to allow for clear imaging of bowel during your procedure. You will also need to fast (no eating or drinking) for some hours before your procedure. You Gastroenterologist will provide you will all the information you need prior to your procedure.
During your colonoscopy -
The procedure is done under sedation. A thin flexible tube with a camera at the end is passed through the rectum into the colon so the Gastroenterologist can examine the bowel to diagnose and sometimes treat problems such as inflamed tissues, polyps and haemorrhoids. Biopsies will be taken and sent for testing for cancer or other conditions.
Colonoscopy can also assist in diagnosing the causes of abdominal pain or unexplained changes in bowel habits and weight loss.
After your colonoscopy -
Recovery is usually straightforward with no/minimal after-effects from the procedure.
You’ll have a follow up appointment with your Gastroenterologist to discuss the findings at the procedure and the biopsy results.
If areas of concern are diagnosed that require further treatment, this will be organised for you. It may mean referral to other medical practitioners.
Even if your colonoscopy is normal, patients who have had a positive FOBT result will need ongoing future follow up, with repeat FOBT testing and colonoscopies.
Who can I see for my Colonoscopy?
Your GP will refer you to a Gastroenterologist.
